At Barcos Wines, we only use indigenous varieties from the Vinho Verde region to create striking and unique wines. These grape varieties are considered indigenous due to their age in this region and the fact that they only appeared in the Iberian northwest.

LOUREIRO

This grape variety has a long history and has been one of the main contributors in recent decades to the success of white vinho verde wines. Aromatically exuberant, it is considered, along with Moscatel, to be the most fragrant of Portuguese grape varieties, suggesting laurel (hence its name), linden, acacia, orange and peach. Loureiro is a very typical grape variety, also used in single varietal wines. Its exceptional aromatic qualities make it, along with other grapes from the region, some of the best Portuguese white wines.

ARINTO (PEDERNÃ)

One of Portugal’s oldest and most traditional grape varieties. Arinto, which in the Vinho Verde region is also known as Pedernã, has good acidity as one of its greatest assets, together with quality structure and a velvety touch. The aroma is fruity, with mineral, green apple and lemon notes standing out. A grape variety of great nobility, it produces wines that evolve very well in the bottle, gaining elegance and complexity.

DRESS

A quality white grape variety, recommended in a large part of the Demarcated Region where cultivation is expanding. Productive, it gives rise to wines with an intense golden straw color, producing musts with a delicate and intense aroma of ripe tree fruits (apples, pears and peaches), with a soft, warm and round taste. It is common to blend the Trajadura grape variety with the Loureiro grape variety in order to give the wines a higher alcohol content and better balance.

WINE

It is a quality red grape variety, recommended throughout the Demarcated Region and, as the only regional red grape variety, it spreads throughout the Vinho Verde Region. It is very productive and produces wines with an intense garnet red color and a vinous aroma, where wild berries (blackberry and raspberry) stand out, with an equally vinous, full-bodied and slightly astringent taste.

ALVARINHO

This grape variety is grown particularly in the Monção and Melgaço sub-region, but given its high quality it has been taken to other parts of the region and the country. The wine is characterized by an intense, straw color, with citrus reflections, an intense, distinctive and complex aroma, ranging from quince, peach, banana, lemon, passion fruit and lychee, to orange blossom and violet, hazelnut and walnut, and honey, with a complex, soft, round, harmonious, full-bodied and persistent flavour.

BORRAÇAL

This quality red grape variety is recommended throughout the Vinho Verde Demarcated Region and is widespread. Productive and rustic, it produces ruby red wines with a grapey aroma that are balanced, harmonious and tasty.

SPADE

Espadeiro is a quality red grape variety, recommended in a large part of the Vinho Verde Demarcated Region, very productive and rustic. It produces light ruby to ruby-colored wines, with an acidic, varietal aroma and taste.
